As long as you can now prove that you did not deliberately do it yourself, keep going and see how long his stamina lasts or if he gives in. It would be even worse to be stuck with defective material and not have it replaced when you complain.

I would demand money from him instead! (Set costs for the removal and disposal of the doors and frames). Then buy and install new doors yourself (no rocket science with Bessey door clamps). I wouldn’t pay a cent for something like that. But I would push this now, after all, you want to live there someday and not always be annoyed when you notice it.

You have to see what is sold as "painted". The cheap ones are laminated and painted once. But it can also be done quite differently ...

Yes, don't let the flitzpiepe soften you up and under no circumstances pay anything. You will never see him again once he has the 900 bucks. It's stupid, but they're just doors. I would look for someone else who can replace the doors with something reasonable and itemize the removal separately on the invoice. Then charge the flitzpiepe!

But first, at least one letter to the flitzpiepe.

May I ask whether it is an established window and door joiner or one from MyHammer? No matter what the answer is: I would take the risk anyway. What is important is that you can prove that you are not held responsible for the dents afterwards. Make nice close-up shots: of each door in overview, and then the dents with a scale.

I sent the notice of defects with photographic documentation by registered mail with return receipt, so all is well. Above all, the extensive repainting can hardly be attributed to me. Not paying anything is legally contestable; I can hardly avoid paying a small amount (even if my sense of justice screams). Generally, you can withhold double the amount it would cost for defect rectification by others; since a door only has minimal damage and the frame is fine, some money will have to be paid. The challenge in such a case is to find someone who can explicitly tell you what is acceptable as defect rectification by me. Almost the only option left is an expert. Response to local carpenter/MyHammer: This is a local carpenter who was initially an extremely agreeable and professional contact; I had dealings with many craftsmen on my construction site, and there was absolutely nothing to criticize about him personally… until I confronted him on site (in a calm tone) with the defects. Completely uncomprehending, he even accused me that I hadn’t installed my parquet neatly in one spot and that I was now being picky with him. I think this shows pretty well what kind of person he is. I would be at most embarrassed by such a work result; I don’t understand this person at all. I will report on how things proceed. Maybe this will also help someone in a similar situation. Have a nice evening everyone
