Hello dear forum,

we are currently planning our house construction.
A solid house with a gable roof is planned. The whole project will be awarded to individual trades.
Basically, our planning is already quite advanced.
We have already commissioned most of the companies and are basically only waiting for the completion of the new development area.
Originally, we wanted to start at the end of 2022, but due to the delayed start of the development,
we decided to start in spring 2023.
The construction company has scheduled us as their first construction site as soon as the weather conditions allow.

Now to my actual topic.
Regarding the topic of the roof truss, I have some questions. I have already tried to eliminate my ignorance by using "Google," but I am not really getting any wiser. I hope you can help me. Due to the sharply increased wood prices, we want to cut our own wood. We have our own forest, and our carpenters with their own sawmill are only 2 km away from it.
I have already discussed the topic with them, and they said it is sufficient if I cut the wood in winter 2022 and then drive it to them. The logs would then be stored outdoors at first until they process the wood.
If, hypothetically, we start excavation at the beginning of March, then we should be able to raise the roof sometime in May.
The question that now arises for me is whether the wood is dry enough for that at all?
Or will the wood have dried enough by then?

The company has really been around for a very long time, and I have not heard anything bad regarding the quality.
Is this procedure normal when building?

I would be happy if you could help me.
Thank you very much in advance

What kind of wood do you have in your forest? Since you can apparently organize transport and sawmill yourself, you can also buy directly from forest farmers at a reasonable price and continue to manage your forest sensibly and in a value-preserving way. The price rally has not yet started on the [Roholzmarkt]. At least prices for beetle wood have recovered.

So he wants to saw still wet wood. That is good. Either wet wood or very dry wood. Semi-wet wood will warp.
By the way, drying an entire log naturally takes 1-2 years.

Of course, he can also process wet wood for the roof structure (cold roof?), which then dries (and shrinks) over time. For me, that would be a no-go.
Especially for warm roofs.

It will also become dry in the sense of "dry for construction," but only in drying chambers. Wood stored outside, I would probably only use in 2023 (they say about one year plus X) – and even then it does not have the low moisture content of kiln-dried wood.

We want to harvest spruce wood. Theoretically, we could also cut pine, but geographically the spruce forest is simply more conveniently located and it would be easier for us.

Yes, that’s how I understood him. Saw wet and then install quickly. We want to insulate our ceiling between the first floor and attic and the side spans, as far up as the living space is flat.
Why would that be a no-go for you? I think the company has executed most of their built roof structures that way.

Because it can crack, shrink, and warp terribly. Our wood was stored as logs for three years, then sawed and further dried in the drying chamber. Which was not cheap either. The carpenters do not use wood stored in some shoddy way or glued laminated timber beams.
