Affordable property in the city for us. I don’t want to live there anymore. I go to the city once a month for shopping.
In our village, there is Edeka, Norma, a gym, a corner shop for building materials etc., a stationery store, pharmacy, gas station, hairdresser, optician, audiologist, banks, baker, butcher, second-hand store, gardener, service providers like nail salon, speech therapy, general practitioners, dentists, library, school with OGS and daycare center.

In the village, there is a mix of community and peace. No violence, no thefts, no waiting lists for daycare, short distances – you can also tell the mayor your mind on Sunday at the fair.

We are also currently moving out of Frankfurt to a nearby town with 10k inhabitants. I don't really have anything against the city, but I don't need it either. Our wish was a large plot with a detached house and a proper garden. You just don't get that in the big city. How is it for you? Can you even find a plot in the city that is comparable to one in the countryside? Or is that not important to you?

a clear indication that former city dwellers have increasingly moved to the countryside.

There are hardly any newcomers. Many returnees from the city. Thanks to the Internet, you are "up to date" behind the moon. We really live off the beaten path. 2 hours to Frankfurt, 2 hours to Nuremberg. Erfurt, Würzburg and Fulda are closer.

Regarding the location and because of your special commute, I would tend to favor the city. But since you don’t travel to work that often and you already have the 1000 sqm plot and would need little money for the renovation, I might prefer that option, provided (!) you can come to terms with the village. I am a city person and would always prefer the city. Especially with children! We live on the outskirts of a city with 600,000 inhabitants and are very happy with it. Regardless of the car, everything is within walking distance, 30 minutes to the city center. Still relatively quiet, very green, you know people in the neighborhood. We were just in Mecklenburg and renovated the bathroom in the bungalow and were completely frustrated in the end. For every little thing, having to drive somewhere again. For everything that was a little more special, at least 30 km drive. For every roll or similar, at least 6 km. Not for us, even the peace and the starry sky don’t make up for it. But that’s very individual. Every location is somewhat different. Friends of ours moved 50 km out; I wouldn’t want to live there, and they have to drive a lot because of the kids and jobs, but they like it anyway. You have an extremely comfortable financial situation and can decide based on honest preferences and don’t have to talk yourself into anything.

Anyone who has lived in the countryside for a long time changes their shopping habits. I don’t want to judge whether that is better or worse, but with good planning it is enough for us to go shopping a maximum of once a week. I have rolls in the freezer, which are freshly baked for the weekend breakfast.
You learn to live ahead, which I don’t find bad per se. Also when visiting hardware markets and similar places, you usually have a whole list of projects in mind and don’t just buy the screws for project A. I can well believe that someone who is not used to this gets desperate because they lack this discipline and suddenly it is no longer so easy to go three times to the hardware market, which they might have done otherwise.

I lived in the city for 13 years, not bad nor loud, but at some point I sat on my city balcony (because in the evenings after work I preferred drinking a glass of wine on my balcony rather than going to a pub) and got annoyed because I only heard cars and on a mild summer evening I would much rather hear grilling. As I said: where I lived it wasn’t loud, but a basic hum of city traffic, the S-Bahn a little away – that created a constant carpet of noise.
And always people around me everywhere, there’s a little autistic part in me that comes out: that annoys me, I need peace, people-free zones and the possibility to simply go for a walk and be alone.

Therefore for me: only countryside!
Out of conviction. We live VERY rurally; apart from a mailbox, a tavern (still!), a church, a tire dealer and a workshop for agricultural machinery, we have 450 inhabitants. Yes, you depend on the car, but with good planning you need it less than you think. We do a lot by bike and before Corona I cycled to the next train station and took the train to Munich (that was 9 km – I don’t consider that a significant distance and there are 3 relatively steep climbs for me, not to mention the hills in between). Currently I only work from home and really enjoy it! Even after Corona, over 50% home office will probably remain (for that I am almost grateful to Corona, that would probably not have been possible before).

But I also know people who found life in the countryside terrible and were very happy when they could live in the city again. I cannot relate to that, but that’s just how it is.
Just the argument: you have to be constantly on the road with the car – I want to contradict that.
You plan better and you learn that.
As I said: there are weeks when we have enough at home and don’t go to the city at all. Since the beginning of March, in Corona times, we have probably only filled up our cars twice.
