Having to drive for every little fart again
For every bread roll etc. at least 6 km
Anyone who has lived in the countryside for a long time changes their shopping habits. I don’t want to judge whether that is better or worse, but with good planning it is enough for us to go shopping a maximum of once a week. I have rolls in the freezer, which are freshly baked for the weekend breakfast.
You learn to live ahead, which I don’t find bad per se. Also when visiting hardware markets and similar places, you usually have a whole list of projects in mind and don’t just buy the screws for project A. I can well believe that someone who is not used to this gets desperate because they lack this discipline and suddenly it is no longer so easy to go three times to the hardware market, which they might have done otherwise.
I lived in the city for 13 years, not bad nor loud, but at some point I sat on my city balcony (because in the evenings after work I preferred drinking a glass of wine on my balcony rather than going to a pub) and got annoyed because I only heard cars and on a mild summer evening I would much rather hear grilling. As I said: where I lived it wasn’t loud, but a basic hum of city traffic, the S-Bahn a little away – that created a constant carpet of noise.
And always people around me everywhere, there’s a little autistic part in me that comes out: that annoys me, I need peace, people-free zones and the possibility to simply go for a walk and be alone.
Therefore for me: only countryside!
Out of conviction. We live VERY rurally; apart from a mailbox, a tavern (still!), a church, a tire dealer and a workshop for agricultural machinery, we have 450 inhabitants. Yes, you depend on the car, but with good planning you need it less than you think. We do a lot by bike and before Corona I cycled to the next train station and took the train to Munich (that was 9 km – I don’t consider that a significant distance and there are 3 relatively steep climbs for me, not to mention the hills in between). Currently I only work from home and really enjoy it! Even after Corona, over 50% home office will probably remain (for that I am almost grateful to Corona, that would probably not have been possible before).
But I also know people who found life in the countryside terrible and were very happy when they could live in the city again. I cannot relate to that, but that’s just how it is.
Just the argument: you have to be constantly on the road with the car – I want to contradict that.
You plan better and you learn that.
As I said: there are weeks when we have enough at home and don’t go to the city at all. Since the beginning of March, in Corona times, we have probably only filled up our cars twice.
