IMHO summer = cool night = inside warmer = bypass on = no heat exchanger -> day outside warm = inside cooler = bypass off = air goes through heat exchanger which cools the warm supply air with the cooler exhaust air.
Heat exchanger works both ways.
How else should air exchange take place during the day?

Not at all. Our system turns off in summer when the outside temperature is equal to or warmer than the inside temperature.

The truth.
You are somehow grasping at straws here.

I'm not grasping at straws here. I'm not a ventilation technician; I can only relay how it was explained and recommended to me by our ventilation installer and what I hear from other users. What everyone makes of it themselves is something they can decide. Just saying that the discussion is pointless doesn't help much. However, you are welcome to explain exactly what and why it is pointless.
