We removed the tiles from the contract with the construction company. We didn’t like what was included in the price, and what was extra seemed unreasonable to me. I bought the tiles from the general importer, made sure to get full pallets, and hired the tiler separately. The tiles cost roughly one-third of what they do in a good specialty store, which also carried them under a fantasy name. You determine the quality level when ordering; they came in exactly as ordered in very good quality, so why not? There are hardly any master tilers left anyway, so you just have to make sure he knows what he’s doing. If he’s a solo practitioner, you can manage it by providing the materials yourself on site. We made a good deal and had good materials neatly laid in the house. We were building in the Stuttgart metropolitan area, where the craftsmen were and still are excellently booked. I had to coordinate the poor guy several times because things didn’t work out with the construction company; I also had to network him with other trades and change some sequences (tiles first, then the door carpenter). Changing the sequence works well if done early; I believe I even fixed that in the contract. The only disadvantage: we had a slight surplus of one type due to buying a whole pallet, but it was still worth it. Personally, I would avoid discontinued patterns—you never know. But that can be inquired about. Best regards Gabriele
