Are the costs for a double garage justified or not?

My father built our garage mostly by himself. It was over 50 years ago.

First, a strip foundation was created, and then he and a colleague built the walls (mostly large pumice stones) in one day.

The roof was made with pumice slabs (about 50 x 200 cm) which rest on double-T beams.

And the floor was then poured with concrete.

The only things done by companies were the installation of the gate and the side door, as well as the plastering.

I want to say that such a thing can definitely be built by a non-professional and thereby save a corresponding amount of money. You just have to dare to do it.

6.15mx9m costs me about €43,000 here in BaWü this year. Built with hollow bricks, sectional door at the front 5.5m, tilt door at the back 2.5m (for driving through), door into the house, basic electrical wiring.

Your garage is a bit bigger, so I see €50,000 as quite realistic. €65,000 also seems too expensive to me even with a lot of equipment.

If you have obtained several (more than 2?) offers, then that is probably the case. It’s best if you give the exact figures. How much do they vary? Have you tried to negotiate?

If you want it to be cheaper:
- Own work
- Build smaller/simpler

Just ask the providers where you could save. Maybe you made an expensive mistake somewhere.

But as the others already wrote, prices won't be halved, in case that is your expectation.

Well, 6.5 x 10 meters including a small separate room.... that's quite something. I don't consider 60,000 euros for the floor slab, exterior and interior walls, roof, and gate unrealistic. However, that does not include any special flooring (do you need that in a garage?) or special doors/windows. I would simply get 3 regional quotes.

You can also do it without a floor slab... we are getting a double garage with a storage room 9m long, also built with bricks. But we are having it paved. Costs for the garage shell are already over 20k...
