Definitely a glaze for wood
I personally would also glaze!
Actually just get the ceiling white
3 in 1 wood ceiling paint
With this you could save the step of priming. It's 3 in 1: priming, isolating, applying paint.
Isolation is important if you can assume that the wood bleeds. That would be the case with hardwoods with a high tannin content. With pine or spruce, nothing should bleed. With PVC definitely not. I think the expensive 3 in 1 is not necessary.
Priming and painting
Sanding is only done if the wood is painted, i.e. has a layer on it. Or PVC. Old paneling and beams usually only have stain or glaze on them to preserve the structure/grain. If the wood is oiled, it will probably always come through, nothing covers that.
Primer is a base coat that creates adhesion between the wood and the topcoat. Necessary for furniture that will be used later (kitchen furniture). For a ceiling, in my opinion, you don’t need a primer with wood.
You see, everything basically depends on the paneling, which wood/material, which previous treatment, what condition it is in.
I would orient myself towards a varnish glaze. Also, as Silke suggests, take a look at the small panels in the hardware store. But keep in mind that you will probably have to paint/spray at least twice if you skip priming.
Many swear by chalk paint/Miss Pompadour, but I often think you can get something cheaper for the ceiling. But looking into Miss Pompadour doesn’t hurt. Whether you can spray it, I don’t know.
Maybe check again what you have on the ceiling and possibly post a photo here.
