If you need privacy screening, you can plant ivy. It grows quickly and becomes completely dense. My neighbors did that and it looks good.

I would be careful with ivy. That stuff grows too fast and in 10 years it develops trunks so thick that you can't control it anymore. The only advantage of ivy is that it is evergreen.

I would simply let different climbing plants grow over the panel fence if I were you. It takes a few years, but it's worlds more beautiful.

I also think that's a very good idea - think of Goethe's "The Sorcerer's Apprentice" when choosing the climbing plants. ;)

But you have read it in context, right? "That's just how it's done" in Australia. Different countries, different customs. In this case, they say "Yuck, how can you present yourself so openly, no one wants to see that!" There is no right or wrong here.
