I regularly go hiking in the Neuwied basin, where countless unplastered field barns made of pumice stand. The pumice boards are normally mortared in the joints. There is only one accessible spot for our project and it is about 5m long. Garages, a fence, and a garden shed are in the way. This basically means that the pumice boards cannot be mortared/plastered from the outside. In addition, plastering is also a kind of protection for concrete/pumice. This way, moisture can penetrate unhindered.
My own pumice garage was unplastered inside and "left natural," and most of my neighbors' I know are white-washed.The interior plaster is only available in a dark gray, which looks very unattractive and further darkens the garage.
