Hello everyone,

we are renovating a house built in 1986. The entire ground floor is covered with yellow/beige Jura marble, which will remain as it is because the underfloor heating was installed as a floating system within it. Now we want to remove a wall to create an open living/kitchen area, so there will be a missing piece of floor in the kitchen at that spot.

We now want to tile the kitchen (9 sqm). What look would you choose? The tendency is towards gray tiles in a concrete look, but I’m uncertain whether that will match. Also, opposite the kitchen is the staircase going upstairs, which would also need to be redone. Ideally, it would have the same tiles as the kitchen so there aren’t too many different floor coverings, right?

I’ve attached a picture of the dining room – the wall on the right will be removed, behind it is the kitchen where the floor would be tiled.

Do you have any ideas? I’m really struggling at the moment...

I would probably choose a "bold" color as the new kitchen floor. That way, both floors would come into their own. The marble is very beautiful in itself, but rather subtle. I think subtle gray next to it would be rather dull, so probably neither floor would come into its own.

Colorful terrazzo or really nicely colored tiles in a modern design (I don't find the ones in the photo so beautiful, but I can well imagine the same concept in a nicer version) or colored linoleum.

What is your interior style like? Should it be more country-style, modern, minimalist? What kind of furniture do you have, how will the kitchen fronts look? Will the doors remain dark? I think that is important to know.

I don't find a cool grey very fitting. I would probably stay within the warm color spectrum, either picking up the cream with matte tiles or the dark tone from the floor, either as wooden flooring, wood-look tiles, or brown tiles. For myself, I would choose something calm with it. But as I already said, everything has to match together, so you also have to consider furniture and other styles and make the choice dependent on that.
The tiles in my example photos are probably too busy next to your floor because of the slight marbling, I was only referring to the base color.

I would use the same material.

Thanks already for the suggestions!
What is your furnishing style? Should it be more country-style, modern, minimalist?

We are furnished rather Scandinavian - lots of white, light gray mixed with warm wood tones.

What furniture do you have, how will the kitchen fronts be? Will the doors stay dark?

The kitchen will be white and handleless with a light gray concrete countertop. The doors will be white.

I find the first tile from your examples the nicest. But it would have to be completely smooth without speckles in the pattern, right? That could actually fit quite well...

Yes, that's what I would say spontaneously too. In my opinion, there shouldn't be any other changing tones in it. I could well imagine a matte, single-color look as a contrast to the smooth marble. Personally, it would be too busy for me otherwise. It's best if you get a few samples because it also has to match the white kitchen front, and cream could be difficult in that regard.
