We are planning to build a house (EH) near a lake. The flood risk is low, but I still wonder which building material (wood or solid) is best suited and most resilient in case of a flood. I naturally receive different opinions from various providers and am quite uncertain. I hope to get a neutral assessment here. Thank you!

Best wood is the best, it can float well during a flood.

And lay the screed preferably floating  I think it doesn't really matter. IMHO, solid construction still has advantages when the drying company comes. Have you considered elevating the house? I don't know the conditions.

First, get more detailed information about this lake from the responsible authority. Does it have a natural inflow and outflow? What were the highest water levels in recent decades? I would try to find out whether the lake is geologically capable of swelling that much. If it lies in a basin and has a natural overflow with essentially unlimited drainage capacity, you do not have to consider this risk as a central starting point for planning. Our city has published an online map that marks and shows flood hazard areas by color. This way, you can immediately see which areas could be flooded by the river that runs through here. We ourselves are 50m away from such an area, so we must practically always expect that this could happen one day. Although not like in the Ahr valley, in 1999 everything was flooded just 20m from our doorstep here as well. You can really only answer this question yourself if, as said, you have closely examined the conditions and then talked about it with an expert.

Getting a spot by the lake is already exclusive in itself, I think. I would like to have such a view from my house, or at least the walking path nearby. If you have to expect that a flood can come, it is something different than if that certainly does not happen. But of course there are also some levels in between. ... and: one should rather expect more trouble than less for the future. Stone or wood? I believe - as an experienced craftsman and construction layman - both have their strengths and weaknesses. Wood - well processed - is tough, stone maybe stands more stable in its place? Above all - my observation after the many disasters I have seen in newspaper reports and on television - is not only the water itself "the danger," but also heavy objects like trees, cars or even other houses that can become dangerous. With envy I read about such an opportunity and am nevertheless glad that this danger does not threaten me - at least. :)

When I think about it, I notice: Nowadays all houses are insulated somehow. This material should be able to withstand water ... or simply be replaceable ...
