Well, you need to know how and have a bit of luck. I had a capable general contractor who was willing to listen. So I awarded the electrical trade separately and partly did it myself.

In my distribution board (which can be seen on the avatar) there is a colorful zoo of manufacturers and everything works together obediently without any complaints.

But even with difficult general contractors, you can simply have a basic installation in KNX done cheaply and then expand it as you like. Provided you plan a bit in advance and have 1-2 extra cables laid in the walls.

Yes and no. With capable, small solid construction contractors / Gü in any case.

We bought from a medium-sized company in timber frame construction, which did a lot individually but was already too big for something like this. They worked with their own electricians, who would have just blindly installed the KNX full wiring and charged a 3-series BMW for it. Only for the basic equipment.

And how many hours did you invest yourself then? That is not to be underestimated either, it must be a hobby, right? I couldn’t do that, I would go crazy if something didn’t work and I had to tinker with it, but I take my hat off to everyone who manages that and the whole thing sounds great!

Everyone can assess the gain in comfort as they wish. I think your project is great and suspect a special benefit in the enjoyment of its implementation.

First of all, hats off, it's hard for a layperson to realize. We also informed ourselves back then, it would have cost at least 60,000 euros! Probably even quite a bit more.

Since only very few of all the functions are really useful and the rest was just gimmicks, it was too expensive for us.

Thanks to the manufacturers' apps, we also have ventilation, heating, video SP, smart lighting in the house. And that's more than enough.

Where do I know that from... I strongly guess electricians who also install KNX, right? We were also fooled by two of their kind. 70,000€ was the quoted price.

That actually sparked my ambition and in the end we realized a complete KNX installation for just over 40,000€, without much own effort. Including 12 HCL lighting circuits, 10 dimmable lighting circuits, presence/motion detectors in every room, shading automation, heating and ventilation control, window and door monitoring, power and current measurement, switchable sockets, etc. pp.
The only thing missing is the visualization, but that is anyway superfluous in a well-planned smart home. If we ever do get the urge to control our lights with an app, there are dozens of possibilities, everything is prepared...

The electricians just see dollar signs in their eyes as soon as someone comes along with KNX. But with a little initiative and interest, these bubbles burst relatively quickly.
