He worked with his own electricians, who then simply installed the full KNX wiring and charged for a 3-series BMW. Just for the basic equipment.
Yes, that is of course not optimal. Careful planning is essential for a successful and affordable automation.
And how many hours did you invest yourself? That shouldn't be underestimated either, it must be a hobby, right?
Hmm, it's hard to estimate because I was there now and then and did something, etc., as usual after work. The parameterization took about three days. Small changes were necessary at the beginning during ongoing operation. For years, I really haven't been involved, except when a new device had to be integrated again, etc. (but even then often only a matter of minutes).
I couldn't do that, I'd freak out if something didn't work and I had to mess with it
Well, that's why I chose KNX. Actually, it runs on the principle: set and forget. You don't notice the technology, it just works.
I suspect a special benefit in the fun of implementation.
Yes, definitely there was that.
Where do I know this from... I strongly suspect electricians who also install KNX, right? We were also fooled by two of their kind. €70,000 was quoted.
It took me some time as well to find a capable and fair company. Moon prices were also quoted to me, or it was said outright that the job would only be accepted if a complete package was booked. Then with many zeros at the end as well...
The only thing missing is the visualization, but that is superfluous anyway in a well-planned smart home.
Yes, I also had none for the first years and didn't really miss it. Often this is a mistake because the builders want everything immediately and with all the bells and whistles. That's part of the reason these monster offers from the electricians arise.
If we do get the urge to control our lights with an app, there are countless possibilities, everything is prepared...
Yes, I initially had none, then briefly one via Commandfusion, now currently with smartVisu... and when I finally find time soon, I'll switch to the home server including visualization. Since there are no limits, everything is possible.
The electricians just see dollar signs in their eyes as soon as someone comes along with KNX. With a little initiative and interest, these bubbles burst quite quickly.
Well, the reasons vary. I believe you can get a minimal setup for little money. Seen that way, the wiring is even easier for the electrician. The cables only have to go from A to B. Only the distribution board gets bigger and needs more material and time. Parameterizing a small installation with few logics can be done in one working day and if you have experience and ready templates even before lunch.
I rather think the large sums come from the desired extensive range of functions. So the regular electrician has to buy in experience (because he usually only knows the system from his training time) and the "real" KNX electrician then often comes with "his" proven devices.
The already mentioned app access. Absolutely overrated, but a huge cost driver.
