Such a system must be installed by a professional? It's only an inlet and outlet that need to be mounted. Or is it only about the 3-way valve with bypass that is installed by the professional?

AVBWasserV §12, Customer installation:
(2) The installation may only be constructed, expanded, modified, and maintained in compliance with the provisions of this regulation and other legal or official requirements as well as according to the generally accepted rules of technology. The construction of the installation and significant modifications may only be carried out by the water supply company or an installation company registered in the installer directory of a water supply company.

Edith: Before the question of a significant modification arises:

[*] Changes to pipelines through, e.g., threading, soldering, welding, screwing, clamping, and gluing

[*] Connection of installations and apparatus without DIN-DVGW mark

[*] Maintenance and replacement of safety or security fittings

[*] Replacement of a floor-mounted shower with a hose shower

    [*] Replacement of a floor-mounted or wall-mounted fitting with one featuring a pull-out shower

I am repeatedly amazed, no, appalled, at how many people actually tinker with the drinking water network themselves (which includes the customer installation). Worst of all is this ridiculous crap sold to people at their doorstep, which does not even have DVGW approval. When the water utility is looking for someone to blame after a drinking water network contamination, the air quickly becomes thin for do-it-yourselfers.

Can calcium chloride be replaced with NaCl?

Of course. Just as magnesium chloride is exchanged for sodium chloride. I understand what you're getting at: calcium chloride and magnesium chloride taste very bitter, sodium chloride very salty. Nevertheless, the softened water does not taste salty, because a change in taste towards salty only begins at significantly more than 200 mg/l sodium content. A properly adjusted DIN-DVGW system does not do this, as the drinking water ordinance does not allow Na>200 mg/l.

As far as I know, the sodium content is increased by 10 mg/l per °dH softening. So I could easily get an additional 200 mg/l. Combined with the limit of 200 mg/l, I end up at 400 mg/l. It’s just a thought and mere theory. Thanks anyway for your input.

Specifically 8.2 mg/l. For 200 mg/l you would have to reduce the hardness by 24°dH, which would probably correspond to 0°dH soft water in many places. Just because of the then high operating costs of the system, this does not make sense. Most manufacturers recommend blending to 8°dH soft water not only for that reason. <5°dH brings you no comfort gain.

If your sodium content in the raw water is already 200 mg/l, no contract installer will install a sodium ion exchanger in the customer's system. The limit values of the drinking water ordinance apply at the point of withdrawal from the customer's system.
