What is being maintained there? My parents have had a system for 15 years - nothing has ever been maintained... The plumber who installed it wouldn't even know what he could do to the closed system. (Except maybe recalibrating the water hardness from time to time)

the system is cleaned (flushed), pH value checked, etc.

I wouldn’t know how

Hello,

: How do you come up with salt water?? The water is softened by an ion exchange process. The salt is used solely for the regeneration of the ion exchange cartridge and is drained into the wastewater during regeneration.

Well - sodium ions are indeed released into the water. Calcium and magnesium are retained in exchange and flushed out later. However, this does not make the water saltier - only the sodium content increases. By how much depends on the softening performance. Additionally, the originally contained amount of Na in the water must be counted, then you have the total content. There are recommended upper limits for this, which are only reached in extreme cases. So rather no problem.

The maintenance steps are in the manual. They consist of visual inspections and light cleaning tasks ([Sieb spülen] etc) as well as a measurement of the water hardness (anyone can do this, costs only a few euros). Function test. Done. This is justified by a DIN and the fear of contamination. Well, everyone has to decide for themselves.

Quite clear: The water tastes salty. We have 24° dH, if you soften that to 5° dH, the taste difference is enormous.
