Either rebuild or finally follow the users' suggestions. How much help do you actually want to get? You have received links, pictures, hints, and tips – have you tried any of them or talked to a tiler? Have you ever borrowed and tested tiles from the tile dealer?

Lay rectangular tiles crosswise to the hallway. This should make the hallway appear somewhat wider.
