Hi, I am a carpenter and I am planning to get myself a terrace roof. How I will do it is not decided yet because I am not quite sure what material I should use and whether I can build it myself or if I should rather hire an external company.
The terrace alone will be 3.5x5m with a roof pitch of 5° and it will be screwed to the facade, which I have already decided.
What is still open is what material I should use, whether wood that can also be nicely painted, or powder-coated aluminum. Wood certainly looks elegant for the first 2-3 years, then it doesn’t look as nice anymore; aluminum will be more expensive, but stays nice longer.
Then comes the roofing, where we also have different options to choose from: first the standard VGS glass, frosted glass or tinted glass, or double-wall sheets made of polycarbonate which are certainly much cheaper but also make a lot of noise.
One question that still occupies me is whether shading is a must-have for such a terrace roof, because my acquaintances have a conservatory and in summer it is unbearable, and under the terrace roof it can happen that exactly the same thing occurs.
The price difference is also quite significant because with wood I could theoretically build it myself and the most expensive material would be the roofing, but my wife recently saw an aluminum terrace roof freshly installed at neighbors by Holza-bau and wants to convince me with womanly arguments that it is nicer, but I am a type of person who actually has no problem paying more to get something good and reasonably priced.
Therefore, my question: Does anyone of you have an aluminum terrace roof or one made of wood and can give me a short feedback on how it actually looks in reality? I would also be interested in what material is best suited for the roofing and whether there really is a big difference between GLASS and plastic. Thanks for your tips and help.
