Sorry, it somehow slipped my mind...

Unfortunately, we never received anything in writing, although we always took notes and wrote pages during every appointment, but never had anything mentioned or confirmed by them .

Our contractor apparently had a sixth sense. Months ago, he already brought an example tile on the pickup and asked if we were sure we wanted them because he was about to order them. As of today, you could say: lucky break.

In the end, only what you have signed with both parties counts. It’s hard to help when you don’t know the exact wording of the contract. But presumably, if nothing is stated in the contract regarding construction time/completion, you probably have no good cards there.
I would also seek a conversation with a specialist lawyer. You don’t have to tell the construction company right away, but just so you have expert advice. The lawyer can tell you whether your construction contract is even valid and which laws apply.

We want to consult a lawyer in the next few days; maybe at least a deadline or something similar should be set to prevent worse things from happening...

Thank you very much for all the responses... Even though my introduction to the topic was our whining, it should not only be about that (does not mean that I am not grateful for every tip!!). The thread title expresses my actual question, and there have already been answers that I have also heard in personal conversations with one or another (if you plan properly, almost everything should work out quite well).

I just want to better understand the actual situation for a conversation with the managing director in order to be able to respond directly. Our situation is bad, I am sure of that, but hardly anyone here can help us with that, we are to blame ourselves and slap ourselves every day for it...

If what wrote a few posts ago is true, then having no description at all might be better than a vague one that allows the contractor to effectively adjust the construction time dynamically. However, the question would be whether this is really stated in the law or if generally acceptable periods have been established through case law. This is already a difference in terms of enforceability.
