Hello everyone,

after our terrace is finally finished, the lawn is happily sprouting, and the garden furniture is in place, we are waiting for summer...

...and when it finally arrives, it gets quite sunny and warm on the south-facing terrace. Now we are looking for a shading option.

Personally, I would prefer a large sun sail (6 x 5 meters). However, we live on a "hill" where it is quite windy. (Neighbor took down his awning again because the wind sensor kept rolling it up.) Does anyone have experience with how the attachment through the [WDVS] into the masonry works here? The other side would be secured with poles and ropes.

My husband would like a 3 x 3 meter cantilever umbrella the most, which can be tilted, rotated, painted, rolled, and whatever else – but I think it’s even more problematic with the wind at that size. And such a monster is certainly not very mobile.

We both don’t want to put a pavilion on the terrace and an awning is out for the above-mentioned reason.

How have you solved this, or do you have another idea?

The sun sail is really a great thing. We had one on the old house as well, but only about 5.5x3.2m. It must be attached to the wall without fail; we used scaffolding screws that ended just before the interior plaster. Supporting the opposite side with poles and ropes is utopia. You need massive posts that must be concreted into a concrete foundation - the posts remain standing all year round.

With that size, the wind can of course play a big role. Our sail stayed stretched the entire season and has even withstood a storm. However, the price is really expensive if it is to be good. Our small sail was already significantly over T€ 1 with only two posts and low effort (assembly done by ourselves).

Hello!

Other idea? Sunscreen? SCNR

Neighbors of ours have a sun sail, which is not attached to the house but sits in a self-contained frame. Looks very chic. Otherwise, I would have little concern about installing an anchor point for such a sun sail through the ETICS into the masonry. An awning is also attached exactly like that, and it holds as well.

An awning would always be ruled out for us, if only for aesthetic reasons. I know few things that I associate with more stuffiness and 80s mustiness than an awning. Garden gnomes and picket fences are in the same league, but that's about it.

Best regards,

Andreas

Search on Amazon for Siena Garden Pavillon Berlino, 4 x 4 m They probably have it at our neighbors, it has held up well so far. How it withstands high wind loads is, of course, still a question. Best regards, Andreas

Isn't every homeowner a bit of a petty bourgeois?

What would bother me about these pavilions and all-year-round sun sails is the constant shade.
Occasionally, when the sun only shines slightly, you also want to enjoy the sun on the terrace.

Therefore, we haven’t progressed further yet. The clear glass-aluminum roofing with awning was first too expensive for us and just an awning is of little use to us since our terrace faces west.
At the moment, it has stayed with the simple cantilever umbrella.
Because of the west side, an adjustable cantilever umbrella would be an option for us.

I consider it a cheap/emergency solution.
