Hello everyone!

We have a REH from 1921 with good insulation and also new windows from 2017, purchased in 2017. Unfortunately, so far without external shading. Our house stays cool for a long time, but the longer a heatwave lasts, the more it heats up. With several days of over 30 degrees Celsius, even the best insulation simply gives in. The living room and one children's room face east, and in summer the sun relentlessly beats down on them until about 1/2 pm, and on those facing west, the sun comes around at about that time as well. So we now want to retrofit external shading as heat protection. Below you can see the types of windows we have. The bottom sashes cannot be opened. There is no electricity at the reveals.

According to my current research, the only reasonable solution here somehow remains the solar roller shutter. Electrically operated would probably be too much effort for retrofitting, manually would mean drilling into 4-year-old windows (cold bridge/thermal bridge?). They are PVC-aluminum windows, which we did not skimp on. Then there are a number of clamp blinds, but they are excluded because of the bottom sashes and operability, right?

What is really important to us first and foremost is heat protection. We could also live with external venetian blinds, provided the operation works. Since we all like to sleep in the dark, very good blackout would also be good, although we already manage quite well with the internal blinds. We are among those people who still air out in the morning during heat and then lock everything up until the evening because otherwise, we really can't stand it; so we are definitely not sun worshippers. The reveals have an external depth of 22.5 cm, so there is quite a lot of space for solutions in the niche.

I wanted to make use of your collective knowledge. Sometimes you can’t see the forest for the trees or see problems where there are none.

Attached are the types of our windows.

Sun protection, such as an awning, roller shutter, or similar, would be one option and feasible with the corresponding price/effort. The second way is to leave everything as it is and install a split air conditioner with one outdoor unit and 2 or 3 indoor units. I would plan both options and prepare offers, then proceed with one.

Not directed against you personally, but rather against the spirit of the times: isn't that ecological madness? Instead of fixing the cause, which would be possible, one installs another power guzzler. Oh no ...

The effort is exactly the problem. I don’t want to open a functional insulation just to install a roller shutter, and afterwards I will have a visual problem because the new plaster and new paint will be noticeable. You could do something like that if the facade were due for renovation anyway, but it is not.

Maybe there are solutions I haven’t thought of yet.

What is your opinion on shutters? Depending on the house, they can look very nice, provide reliable heat protection, and can be operated manually from the inside using a crank. Completely retrofittable with a small hole for the crank.

The simplest and most effective measure would of course be the heat pump for cooling, because it is relatively easy to retrofit and involves little dirty work.

Exterior blinds would also be possible, but these must be controlled depending on the sun and require electricity at every window.

Otherwise, there are also awnings, shutters.

Natural shading by trees would be best but... yes, it takes time.
