I called it an automation option because of the requirement for ease of use. I wouldn’t need them either. The Italia awnings are compact, provide shade, and yet let daylight in. Only they do not darken for the early or late midsummer night’s rest.

We solved the problem on our south side with sun protection window film on the outside of the windows. It keeps the heat out very well.

We have a similar problem to you, and sometimes find it unbearable in the summer. We have aluminum shutters, external blinds on the roof windows, and after ventilating at night, during the day everything is still stuffy. And still, after a prolonged heatwave, it eventually gets too warm and then you can’t get rid of the heat even at night.
In the end, we bought a split air conditioning unit and, well what can I say, it was the best investment in years. To hell with ecology. In summer, we now have a nice cool house, no matter how long the heat period lasts. And if we can believe our meteorologists, it won’t get any better in the coming years.

I think you are even more sensitive than we are^^. 2017 was the last normal German summer here, and even then it wasn’t a problem without shading. A few warm or hot days are no problem, but when it’s hot for weeks, it really gets warm. And the windows are the key point. In the height of summer, our best-insulated attic floor is the coolest story because we also have solar roller shutters there.

I’ll take a look at these sliding shutters from Italie

I don’t think window film is a solution for us, I haven’t seen one yet that I found visually appealing.

Since 1996, summers have consistently been above the reference value 1961 - 1990. Even the summer of 2017, which we remember as "normal," was hot. I really like your approach of using external shading instead of immediately consuming energy to cool again. Somehow it's perverse: we build better insulated houses to consume less energy. Then we realize that the insulation also makes it harder for heat absorbed in summer to escape the house, and we install air conditioning. This pretty much kills efficiency and life becomes sealed off from the outside. I know this from countries where you move from one air-conditioned building to another air-conditioned vehicle and then to the next air-conditioned room. Hard to say whether we are "sensitive" or just "comfortable" about it.

Yes, so air conditioning and other energy-consuming things are out of the question. I have an eco-heart, at least mostly. I travel a lot by train and bike, shop at the zero-waste store and buy regional, and the four of us only use about 2200 kwh of electricity per year... a downward trend for years, gas and water at similarly low levels. I garden "ecologically," preserve fruit for the winter, plant in a way that's friendly to animals, etc. Air conditioning and anything similar simply don't fit into the concept. (But don't worry, I'm not a pushy eco: eek: , I just decided many things this way for my personal conscience).

The summer of 2017 is at least the last summer I considered normal^^.

I have now researched intensively again and it really seems that only two options remain for me, and that is 1. solar shutters or 2. window shutters. Visually, my old building lover's heart would of course favor option 2. However, on some windows only folding shutters would be possible due to space constraints/narrowness of the windows. And of course, for aesthetic reasons, all windows would actually have to be equipped with them. In that respect, option 1 would ultimately be significantly cheaper.
