Once the plot has been found and the building and planning law conditions are known ([Bebauungsplan] or §34 Building Code), the architect can, in coordination with you, prepare a preliminary draft/design based on a space program and your budget and develop it up to building application readiness. Usually, 3 variants are covered by the agreed fee in the preliminary draft and are mostly sufficient. I recommend not planning too far ahead or committing too much already, as the architect may come to different and more advantageous conclusions or legal or constructive conditions may not have been considered in your preliminary considerations. The architect is paid for the design work anyway. Otherwise: see my 1st post.
