Hello, we built about two years ago. Unfortunately, soundproofing within our detached house was neglected in the planning. Unfortunately. Upstairs we have 11.5 partition walls made of Poroton. Now the problem is that you can hear every single beep from every room at a normal room volume. We consulted a structural engineer and architects, but they said that the minimum requirements regarding soundproofing were met. And if we had placed great importance on soundproofing, it should have been taken into account during the house planning. For me, that statement is a disgrace. Then I might as well use kitchen paper as a partition wall. Now the question is what to do to improve the soundproofing without much effort.

Is Poroton really that bad when it comes to sound insulation, or are you exaggerating? Our children's rooms are also only separated by a 115mm wall – but made of KS. Are there possibly other weak points besides the wall? Is the screed properly separated from the wall, and how is the ceiling constructed?

Thanks already for the answer. We actually suspect another weak point, namely the ceiling insulation in the individual rooms. Maybe the insulation wool was simply laid over the partition walls and then covered with plasterboards. Maybe the airborne sound is thus transmitted via the collar beams (statement from the carpenter). When my wife reads a book quietly to the children, you can hear it in the other room. That really can’t be right. We have absolutely no problems with impact sound. Our screed installer did a top job there. When the children are romping upstairs, you can hardly hear anything on the ground floor. But the problem with the partition walls upstairs is now a big annoyance for us. One does not rebuild solidly just to clad some walls additionally. Then I could have built a wooden house. I think the minimum requirements for sound insulation must be legally significantly improved even for detached houses. It can’t be that an architect simply says that this is within the standard. This is how it’s built now. One slowly loses the fun of the house.

As far as I know, there are no requirements for soundproofing in single-family houses, only a recommendation (but I might be mistaken). The whole topic has also been discussed here before: I would do it properly (have it done) if I were you and then be happy instead of worrying forever.

Probably not possible. Either work with secondary lining and suspended ceilings or dismantling.

Hello,

In this particular case, it is not simply the architect who says so, but you decide – or have decided – what should be installed in your house; even with a contract for work with a general contractor. You could have asked... Your planner could have explained VDI 4100 to you. I also do not see the need to be paternalized everywhere and at all times; I don’t need a ‘left hand’ who, among other things, think they have to do my thinking for me.

It is known that sound insulation no longer plays a role with perforated bricks (Poroton) from about 30 cm thickness; accordingly, 11.5 cm walls cannot meet this requirement. That is why many solid house builders offer to build the interior walls of an attic (DG) in lightweight construction. Then again, many homeowners cry out loudly because a gypsum board-clad “wall” is after all not massive, stubbornly ignoring that there is hardly a better solution for their attic; sometimes it really drives one crazy.

Get expert knowledge into your house before you start tinkering around. If a subsequent solution is possible or, for example, if the floor insulation was botched, he/she will notice and present you with alternatives that can provide relief.

Happy New Year!
