Sliding door does not completely disappear into the wall

Hello everyone,
We had a carpenter install a sliding door between the kitchen and the living/dining room. The door was actually supposed to completely disappear into the wall, but now it sticks out about 10 cm beyond the frame. The reasoning from the installer was that otherwise you wouldn't be able to remove it from the slot, meaning that the handle recess always has to remain on the outside.
For that – or so I thought – there are small fold-out hooks or another milled handle recess on the end of the door leaf.
Unfortunately, we did not select the sliding door in detail; I thought it was clear and "standard" for such an interior door that it would completely disappear into the walls.

What do you think about this?
And would it be possible to retrofit such a hook/handle recess on the end side with reasonable effort? Unfortunately, the guide rail below is already screwed into the parquet; so, ugly drill holes would likely remain, as the rail would also have to be recessed into the wall.

Best regards

Of course such a thing exists, you're being told nonsense. I had two such doors at construction 19190, each with fold-out metal parts. Unfortunately, I no longer live there and cannot send a photo, but it was recessed into the end wall. The door was completely gone. I don't know exactly what the part is called, but every door/hinge manufacturer knows that. Maybe he simply didn't leave enough space during installation to make the door disappear completely. Can you even push it all the way in? Such a door must be able to disappear completely, from my point of view that would be unacceptable. Whoever is allowed to call themselves a carpenter nowadays, shouldn't they be ashamed? That is probably one of the stupidest attempts to fool a builder.

Hal, I found it, what a coincidence; actually I wanted to photograph my buddy, but this accidentally got into the picture. You pressed the round button on the front end and then this approximately 4x4cm metal square popped out, sort of like a ring, and you pulled the door out by it and pushed the square back in - click and done. There was still a separate handle shell just the same. Show him that - topic settled. The problem now will rather be his ill-considered installation situation because of it.

For me, the door almost goes completely into the wall and it also has a fold-out eyelet at the front end to get it back out again. On the side, it has recessed handles that disappear into the wall. But: You can easily pinch your fingers if you grab the recessed handle and do not let go in time before it disappears into the wall. I have managed that myself, but especially for children, that could pose a danger. Maybe your door was designed that way for this reason.

Yes, such hooks or similar do exist. The previous speakers have also confirmed that. But the problem is that you did not specifically discuss what is to be delivered. There is no ONE standard for the sliding door. What you have is also standard. Unfortunately (for you). One must never assume anything or consider it clear.

The question will be how the current door situation has been technically implemented. Possibly a system was used that does not allow the door to slide further in. But only the carpenter can tell you that. Perhaps he will also accommodate you with the price. I do not see any entitlement to a change, since you received a fully functional door with a standard solution. If it is different from what you expected, you have only yourselves to blame, not the carpenter.

Hi, both (completely recessed and slightly protruding) are common technical solutions, each with its own justification. The question is, what did you order?

Best regards,

Andreas
