I think that's nonsense. We played a lot in our children's rooms as kids. It was great that we had the sun in the room. And for heat, there's cooling. However, I wouldn't overestimate it. What I find especially important is light from two sides.

As a child, I actually never played in my children's room, but always and exclusively in the living room or kitchen-living area. I also think if it makes sense to have the children's room in the light, but I wouldn't orient the floor plan accordingly.

see? As children, we always played in the garden or in the living room or hallway
But maybe cooling is not planned at all or not in the budget?
Light from 2 sides? In my opinion, that only works in very few cases.

I would claim that children don’t care at all when and how much light comes into their room at what time of day or year. I never gave it a thought before building the house...
Clearly, it’s a nice-to-have to be able to place the children’s rooms facing south, but I actually find it negligible if that means the neighbors can’t look directly into my bedroom or bathroom.

At first, this discussion about southern children's rooms really unsettled me. But now I also think, if it fits the circumstances: GREAT, if not, it's absolutely not a big deal... For example, in our case, it's just not possible unless we give up things that are really important to us... By the way, as a child, I spent a lot of time in my room and I voluntarily "moved north" because I wanted the bigger one back then, of course, I didn't know about the whole north thing yet. I never really found it dark (despite the one-sided window).

I think it is also very unsettling for all TE who present their floor plans for discussion and then immediately get criticized for having children's rooms in the south.

Of course, it is honorable to design the house according to the needs of the children, but I built a house for the family, and that includes the parents. Why reserve the best spots for the children's rooms when they won't appreciate it anyway (where would they get that from?) and will eventually move out. Eventually, I have nicely sunlit south-facing rooms serving as storage, and the parents have to put up with the supposedly worse rooms for the rest of their lives.

The question is rather which of the other rooms should be better placed in the south? The bedroom, where you are mainly at night? Ridiculous. The bathroom is still an option – but usually the pipes run above the living room and filling the entire sunny side is rather the exception. So what is left, besides the dressing room (where some even completely forgo light) and the children's rooms? Then I would put the children's rooms in the sun. They are the only ones who can make use of the light and still enjoy it. Of course, there are still families who need a study, etc. But those are individual solutions.
