That actually works quite well. We have deliberately stored things there that we do not need when someone is sitting there. For example, cake stands, serving platters, thermal flasks, etc. are stored there. We are happy with the storage space and also with the island width.
We also have a counter at the island. We had a raised bench made in front of it by the carpenter because we couldn’t get along with bar stools. This is used daily, especially for breakfast in the morning.
