Hello,
I don't want any grasses "right on the doorstep" either.
I wanted either a hornbeam hedge or flowering bushes – hedge roses... I'm still undecided. There must be shrubs that don't let their roots grow so deep.
Best regards

Buchs! Also suitable for hedges or framing. In addition, a standard rose and suitable grasses or [Steppensalbei]...

I might place a small Plumbago tree in a pot at the critical spot here. It will grow to about 2 m tall, blooms blue/purple, and goes into the garage in winter. The idea is not fully developed yet, but it’s coming along.

We both don't like boxwood - we find that it smells strange - but we could get along with privet

I don't like him at all. Instead of boxwood, you can also plant [Immergrün].

We will plant a long hedge. After a lot of back and forth, I have decided on a holly hedge. Whether it will be planted this year still depends a little, just a tiny bit, on whether we still feel like planting the plants after moving in.
Because someone has to water them through the summer.

So everyone has their likes and dislikes
Evergreens? I only know them as ground cover.
Ilex? And it doesn't root that deep? That would also be something, something different.

Ilex does not root deeply, depending on the variety.
