So the wall is to be retiled. Up to the height where the plaster is now. Where the tiles are now, there is no plaster anymore. The gypsum board sounds practical. In the kitchen, you could do it that way, but is that possible in the bathroom as well? The tiles there are placed directly on the wall just the same.

We glued the drywall to the wall in the bathroom. Tiles will be laid there soon as well. It is really important to use tile spacers. And to apply plenty of mortar to the boards. I also meant the old adhesive/mortar when I said plaster. Edit: maybe someone else has another idea. Edit2: primer must be applied to the masonry before gluing.

So at least I know that it makes sense to completely chip off the tiles with the mortar/adhesive and then prepare the wall. Thank you very much for that.

I will then find out what kind of substrate is suitable for the tiles.

Gypsum board really sounds like the easiest to implement.

The tiles were laid in a mortar bed at your place. I would also remove this. The new tiles can then be attached to the wall again with mortar; for this, the surface just needs to be free of loose parts, no further treatment is probably necessary.

Or you plaster the wall after removing the mortar and then stick the tiles onto it.

As it looks, the tiles were laid using the thick-bed method, and those above them using the thin-bed method. I would also work with plasterboard panels for wet rooms. Well, for plasterboard the substrate must of course be well prepared, otherwise the panels will fall off the wall again. The old tiles should be thoroughly cleaned with an alkaline cleaning agent and then primed with bonding primer. Whether the panels need/can be attached with setting gypsum or adhesive should be clarified in advance. Furthermore, it should be considered that the panels should be sealed with sealing tape, sealing sleeves (pipe penetrations...), and liquid foil in the shower/bath area. Get advice on that.

Good day,

is right - the tiles were originally laid using the thick-bed method; not uncommon for older houses, as the system indicates.

In the bathroom, if the finished space is later sufficient to accommodate all fixtures, I would work with green plasterboard. Nevertheless, I would knock off all remnants of the previous pantry; this usually comes off very easily and, with double-layer boarding, you almost retain the existing space.

In the kitchen, I would "only" completely remove everything, create a homogeneous surface with appropriate plaster, and then retile. It often comes down to centimeters there, which you "could" be missing in a later kitchen planning.

Rhine regards
