Okay, I was probably too vague. So we hardly ever use our TV. But when we have visitors or interesting news comes on, we do turn the box on. Now our satellite receiver has broken down for the second time and the box is just gathering dust. EnviaTel has now offered us fiber optic cable, which almost the whole village is joining. But it will still take a while and they don't offer TV in my opinion. My husband refuses Amazon out of principle and we don't want Telekom because then we would have to get the whole package from them, which we would have twice. Currently we are using Vectoring from Telekom – whatever that is. Honestly, I don’t understand it anymore either, but where else can you watch TV over the internet and what device would be needed for that? You’d have to explain the technology to me like I’m a toddler. Sorry for that.

You should know which devices the provider supports, usually the receiver comes from the provider. But whether it is a Sat receiver or an IP receiver, it doesn't matter, except that Sat is still cheaper because it is free (except for HD+) and the Internet provider charges for the service. Also, every reasonably current TV has a Sat tuner on board.

I’m afraid our TV is getting old... :D I think we’ll use Telekom for now and then scrap it when envia tel pulls the cable.

Even though Amazon is already out: connect to HDMI, use the Waipu or O² TV app and you’re done. Costs €10/month. Just for reference.

1. If satellite is available, continue to use it for Free TV. Every TV can do that. If you want to watch Asi and Trash TV on private channels in HD, then HD+
2. All apps and IP-TV providers offer 1. for money, but they can't do more
Recording etc. also works with satellite and a connected hard drive
3. Every IP-TV receiver from Amazon, Apple etc. can do 2.
4. Every newer TV has the apps of the streaming providers on board, so you don't need anything else
5. If you take internet from any provider, you can always get a suitable TV add-on with receiver/box

IP TV is simply television over the internet connection. Many channels offer this completely free of charge, especially all public broadcasters. And that applies both to livestreams and the various media libraries. The same goes for many private broadcasters. The offers from internet providers (like Telekom etc.) are only needed if you have special TV wishes (24h live football or movies from Disney, Netflix & Co). These additional offers are provided not only by the network operators but also by many providers. You always need a device that on one side is connected to the home LAN or WLAN and on the other side to the television (if it does not already have this built-in). The cheapest of these devices is probably the Amazon Fire TV Stick. To use it, you need a free amazon account. The cheapest DIY solution is kodi on a Raspberry Pi. Otherwise, there are hundreds of IP-TV devices around 50 - 100 €, but you have to hope that they still receive current software after three years.
