Hello everyone,

after a long search for a painter we have finally received an offer from a company that is very well rated, appears competent, and also regularly supervises new construction projects.

The painter suggests only wallpapering the ceilings with [Malervlies] and otherwise filling all walls to Q3, including joint tape, priming, and painting.

Is this approach common? We thought that usually [Malervlies] is applied everywhere.

Best regards

Did he give you a reason why he wants to paint without fleece? I would also rather recommend using fleece. I thought about it for a long time myself (and annoyed the forum here^^) about what we should do with the walls. The painter is currently working on it for us. I think visually Q3+painting would be fine, depending on what requirements you have. But my painter said he would always wallpaper, simply because it gives a warmer living feeling and the wallpaper (depending on its texture more or less) acts as a crack-bridging layer, which can be invaluable in a new building.

He says that cracks in the wall surface hardly ever occur and you could save quite a bit of money because of that. In his experience, it looks different on the ceiling and he strongly recommends a fleece there.

Funny, mine said just today (we have several small hairline cracks) in response to my question that this type of cracks is completely normal and hardly avoidable. I asked if it was because draft air got on the plaster too quickly. The painter (not from the main contractor, my own) said that’s not the case, cracks can always occur. But I have to add that we got Q2 plaster from the main contractor and hired the painter ourselves, but not explicitly for Q3. We’re getting textured fleeces. He still primes and sands everything to correct smaller flaws in the plaster. We’re using the textured fleece anyway, because we assume that settlement cracks can still occur in the first few years.

Are you building with solid construction or timber framing? We have gypsum fiber as a base.

If you want, you can come visit me sometime and see how much "hardly ever" can be. I would never take walls without fleece/wallpaper again.
