Certainly, you need some manual skills and the appropriate tools, etc., but then it works. It will certainly not be as perfect and won’t go as fast as with a professional, but then it’s homemade. The best way, as Nordlys already wrote, is to lay down gravel and then sand/gravel/split on top and arrange the stones as you like. When leveling the sand/gravel/split, you should work neatly so that you don't have height differences/waves afterwards. This spring, we also have the driveway with about 100m² to do.
