Partially level elevated land; should the topsoil be removed first?

Thank you. Do you mean the soil that was dumped on the property or the already existing vegetated soil there, or even both?

Thank you very much as well. However, I don’t really understand what you mean. Could you perhaps try to express it a little differently? Thanks

The existing soil with grass and normally humus. But the soil in the pictures looks inferior to me. Four years ago I had an entire construction area with such soil. It was actually more expensive there to keep the relatively inferior soil than to bring in new soil. In my region, topsoil costs almost nothing due to large construction sites. Of course, it might be different for you, wherever you are.

Hey

the situation here is pretty similar or rather identical regarding the slope. We initially had the excavation behind the house piled up by the shell builder, and the topsoil was pushed onto a separate pile. However, there is probably still some topsoil underneath the clay (which we also mainly have as excavation). Well, that is basically lost now.

We are already one step further and have now had a relatively flat level made out of the clay pile (similar to your desired terrain profile). However, I’m currently worried about the embankment. The clay was neither compacted nor anything. It seems stable now (dry and hot weather), but what will it look like when the rainy season starts again?

The specific question would be how to secure the embankment without elaborate dry stone walls or ugly gabions, so with clever planting. Do you already have any ideas on that?

Best regards!

Hello,
by now I can provide feedback on the matter. After the ground was inspected by a road builder with experience, he himself, like , said that the topsoil is not suitable as topsoil and we should simply cover it up. Since we will have a lot of slopes anyway, our flat area will be limited, so the costs for obtaining topsoil will be manageable.
Basically, we plan to compact during the filling process.

Due to our development plan and after consultation with our construction company, a slope as I sketched in the initial thread is not possible. Unfortunately, we will have to make the slope less steep and plan 1-2 berms with at least 50 cm.
Unfortunately, only slopes alternating 1 to 2 and 1 to 3 are allowed here. After consultation with a site manager in road construction, it should be sufficient without greening, without the slope sliding. However, to prevent ruts from forming due to rainfall, he still recommends greening. For the "gentle" slope, even grass would be suitable. We have not yet concretely considered how we will implement this later.
A friend of mine, who has a similar slope, is thinking about planting ivy because it supposedly has strong root growth and grows quickly but only quite shallow.

I am surprised, given how long you have already been here, that you ask a question like a newcomer. The forum search works dreadfully, I know - but you should have come across the thread by often enough to have recognized parts of the story fitting your property.
