Hello everyone,

we are in the early stages of our house planning and are currently visiting various model home exhibitions.

We were in a house that featured a window front about 4 meters wide over 2 floors, which definitely looked quite appealing visually. The windows were divided into 2x2 meters in width and also had 2 elements in height. My research on the internet showed that the window prices are not that high

    [*]Kunststoff feststehend – 300 x 260 cm – 750 EUR

Of course, installation is additional.

Is it easy to combine such elements? In this case, 4 pieces of 2x2?

What other disadvantages might I be overlooking? I understand the insulation value and window cleaning.

Has anyone worked with panoramic windows and can provide concrete costs?

Maybe it’s just a short-term whim and we’ll file it away again in a week.

Thanks in advance!

I have no personal experience with the matter. But what I keep hearing: Large window surfaces over 2m almost always have problems with stability. Of course, everything is calculated and should work, but if you ask someone who has it: it rarely runs smoothly. There is always something.

In addition, there is of course the cleaning effort, which is not only about the frequency of cleaning but often simply about the accessibility of the surfaces.

Therefore, I would only have large windows planned and executed by people who specialize in something like this. For example, Huf-Haus or similar.

Are you really clear about the insulation value? I mean the overall effect? We have four floor-to-ceiling doors each nearly 2m wide and a window almost room-high and 4m wide... That leads to quite a bit of energy loss (despite KFW55). It doesn’t make you poor in the end, but it’s definitely not free either.

Colloquially: You buy a super-insulated house and then you let the saved energy escape again through the window front. But okay, you know that already. Just check what difference it makes. A lot of surface area also makes a big difference.

Then also: What orientation do we have for the front? What is cold in winter becomes warm in summer. Very warm. So heat protection, roller shutters or external (automatic) shading is a huge issue. (Or air conditioning) Both cost money too.

And then at the end from my side something about the comfort factor. My wife insists that the large glass surfaces cause drafts. So “fall winds” at the window that then pull along the floor into the room. Since the underfloor heating nowadays only works with low supply temperatures, this cold presumably reaches quite far into the room. I notice it myself when I sit near the windows on the floor playing with my children. And here again... a lot of surface, a big effect. And if it spans 2 floors in a row, the effect will be even greater.

Real shutters can help somewhat against cooling in winter. Against sunlight in summer, I would make sure there is enough roof overhang. In the summer months, the sun is higher. Properly calculated, not a single ray of direct sunlight comes through the windows. In winter, the opposite: you heat the whole place when the sun is out. Additionally, the maintenance effort decreases with a proper roof overhang.

Both together can somewhat compensate for the disadvantages.

Big problem with acquaintances of ours: radiation cold!!! They also had a dining table in front of the large glass front... but that just doesn’t work. It is simply too cold... the air (cold) also falls directly down by the window. So if... then really triple-glazed or with a heating outlet in the floor directly in front of the window..

For perceptible "radiation cold," the Innenpane of the window must be very cold – and why should it be? Then the window is not well installed, has poor quality, whatever.
