with "there are other levers than do-it-yourself walls" I mean planning and equipment details such as hipped roof, bay windows, corner windows and things like that. Or if you put your house in the very back corner, you can pave the driveway with bank notes. Dozens of partial aspects add up to larger amounts than can be compensated with a self-mason wage.

I understand what you mean, and I partly agree with you, but some things are better left to the professionals. I assume you have built before and have seen a bill of quantities and a construction contract; such things should not be left to a layperson. Comparing 5 offers costs only 300 euros. Trying to save in the wrong place can be very dangerous and expensive, as with this Covid situation.It means that if you really spent as much time as you claim on researching all the different aspects of building a house, you can spend your money in a more effective way and make up for the missing expertise by staying present in this forum. :)
