Hello everyone,
I am looking for a suitable server cabinet for our basement to
1) accommodate a cable modem from Vodafone (Vodafone Station Modem with about 20cm depth), which is then connected to our switch on the ground floor and from there to the WLAN access point.
2) Additionally, I would like to have for automation purposes (electricity meter recording, future irrigation control, possibly groundwater pump control) a SIMATIC S7-1200 with I/Os, as well as a SIMATIC HMI panel for visualization. Mostly just for fun, but that’s another story.
S7-1200
HMI Panel 12 inch
The depth of both devices does not exceed 15cm.

3) Probably a switch to have enough ports in the basement in the future.
What would be suitable here?

4) Possibly another PC/server in the future

What would you think is a suitable cabinet? I would like one with a window and it should ideally not be too deep. Most start at 60cm depth, which is quite bulky and I have to check in the basement if it wouldn’t be in the way. Better would be around 40cm-45cm like here: [45cm Tiefer Serverschrank]

I like the design of it, but it would have to be taller. Like this one: [Serverschrank 9HE]

Do I actually need a special mounting method for the PLC and the panel? Normally they are on a DIN rail, but I don’t know if a DIN rail corresponds to server mounting methods?

Thanks for your help.

I have a Digitus network cabinet with 9 U and 450 mm depth. It is super cheap and available everywhere. I am very satisfied with it. The HMI panel is normally not intended for a server cabinet. I believe there is no ready-made 19" solution to buy. Maybe it is enough to have a suitable sheet metal with the appropriate cutout and a few holes made. You can order everything very conveniently online and have it delivered to your home.

Isn't a logo enough for you?
The 1200s are quite expensive for the little logic you probably put in there. For a 1212c you get almost 3 logos.
An HMI is always installed in "sheet metal," meaning a cutout, and clamped from behind with brackets and screws.
But even here... expensive. TP1200 costs four figures.

The 20cm depth doesn't bother you in the end? Who knows that you screw to the side walls anyway.

Take a look at Rittal, that's the industry leader.

Go for 600mm depth if you want to install a server. Otherwise, you will only get 19" cases with ITX boards in there later, because with a 450mm cabinet, the 19" case simply isn't deep enough. For a shelf with a NAS standing on it, 450mm is certainly sufficient.

I personally find Rittal excessively overpriced; you can save your money. Take a look at Digitus.

Rittal builds great cabinets, but there are also dealers who offer more than just one manufacturer. We occasionally buy from it-budget. Modern "real" servers, by the way, require cabinets at least 100cm deep . Keep in mind, from time to time you might need to do something with the components inside the cabinet. Not everyone has tiny little fingers, a bit of space around everything makes it more comfortable.

Thank you,
Digitus and IT budget seem to fit well, I think.
I have since seen that there are even special sizes with 300mm. That way, you won't get stuck on it in the basement (would hang in a niche in the hallway).

S7 and Comfort Panel would be more like play devices as a loan, possibly from the employer so that I can engage more with the products again.
