Gravel gardens have been legally banned in Baden-Württemberg since last week anyway. Thank God.

Why do people probably no longer want trees in their gardens?

Tree protection: in the past, people put trees in their gardens and trimmed and cut them down as they wanted.

And simply replanted.

Today everything is in the cadastre and overregulated; if you're unlucky, you are not allowed to fell or cut but have to pay for expensive maintenance measures by a tree doctor.

A neighbor of ours had tall trees by the street felled. He had to hire a professional company and plant 20 compensatory trees (fruit).

The whole thing cost him over 10,000 euros in total.

They were not allowed before, but no one cared about it.

Of course, there is again a regulatory frenzy, but at my parents' place I have noticed once more how nice an overgrown garden makes the warm temperatures bearable. At our place, various things are gradually growing too, a pear tree, an apple tree, blueberries, currants, raspberries, hydrangeas, magnolias, lilacs, etc.. In addition, there are zucchini, tomatoes, cucumbers, etc... and two fig seedlings are also growing. It all happens step by step and still we have meadow areas for the children to play. In the end, we have just over 200m² of our own property and about another 200m² of adjacent land leased.

I find rock gardens terrible or gardens that basically consist only of lawn area and at most 2-3 flower beds.

At this point, I would like to say again that it was not about whether I should plant something, but whether we are fundamentally bound to the species usage list on the property.

The problem with the simple specification "tree" or "hedge" is: For example, if a gingko and a cherry laurel/thuja hedge are planted. At first, it's green, but unfortunately not native and does not benefit our insects at all. And then we are back to land obligations. That's why the species specifications.
