At the latest with children, I find your desired layout impractical. One of the nicest things about a house is that I can just send my kids out of the living spaces onto the terrace and into the garden. Then I can keep an eye on them from the living/dining area and don’t have to run back into the house for every little thing.
In our current rental house, we have it the way you imagine. No level access to the garden. Because of that, I’m constantly running in and out and up the stairs. Forgot a drink — up the stairs, the doll has to come to the garden — up the stairs, an apple — up the stairs, the phone rings — up the stairs…. And I can’t even just put them in the sandbox and work on something in the kitchen because I can’t see them from there. So, I always sit in the garden unless I’m running up the stairs ;-)
