Hello,
we are currently building a small terraced house extension. A total of 35 sqm of living space is being created, divided between a living room with dining area and kitchen. The floor plan is set and the walls are already half built. Now I have started to think about the kitchen layout and have become uncertain about the planned windows. Before the window openings are probably bricked up on Monday, I would like to have a few opinions.
Contrary to the plan, we want to install a 2 m double-leaf sliding door to create a semi-open area to the living room. Wall to the right of the passage approx. 1.10 m, to the left approx. 1.30 m. Behind the 1.30 m wall is also our dining area in the living room (the tall window will be moved 50 cm away from the wall).
So far, we have also been doing well with a kitchen of the same width (2.20 m) and 70 cm less length. This is arranged as an L and there is still a cabinet with a depth of 50 cm on the left window side. However, we have not had a window on the long edge until now and our kitchen passage is much narrower. And we notice that we now naturally also have some more sophisticated/modern ideas than we did when furnishing the mismatched hardware store pieces years ago. ;-)
As appliances, we need the usual hob (induction), a combined fridge/freezer (either standard size or maybe a wider one?), of course a sink (possibly a corner sink?), we also find a raised oven very practical. Then of course various small appliances including a microwave. However, we do not want a range hood. Currently, I have a continuous work surface of 2 m width (besides some smaller areas) and would like to have that again. It is good for baking together with the child and better half. Storage space next to the fridge, stove and sink I find practical.
The larger window faces west. Below there should be a fixed element of 30 cm and above it a sash for opening. We do not yet know if we want to build a work surface in front of it. Even if not, I find the fixed element practical so that you do not have to clear the entire windowsill (decoration, herbs...) when opening the window. The sill height is planned at 90 cm but I have read that this is unfavorable with a 90 cm worktop height? What would be better? On the left and right of the window there are only 53 cm. Too little? Should the window rather be planned at only 101 m (masonry opening) with less light but gaining 6 cm on each side? However, this would only be necessary if I plan tall appliances such as fridge or oven at sight height on the adjoining walls, right? For worktop + wall cabinet, 53 cm should be enough, right? On the right side of the window I rather envision work surface with wall cabinets. Large appliances would be more relevant for the short wall by the passage. But do they even make sense there with a room width of 2.20 m, or is that too tight with a work surface opposite?
The small window is on the north side. Originally only planned to see who rings at the gate, for example, and maybe also a bit more light. Contrary to the plan, we have already reduced it to 63.5 m (masonry opening) (I had even considered only 50 cm but the better half advised against it) and raised the sill height to 1.20 m. Or are 1.25 or 1.30 better? Or rather lower and also here a fixed element? Now I have had several kitchen designs in mind but somehow the window always clashes with the hob. I do not want it directly under the window. I find it practical when the sink is not too far from the stove, with a bit of work and storage space in between. But no matter whether the sink is at the window or in the other corner, somehow the stove always ends up at the small window. Especially since I envision a continuous 2-meter work surface. Should I have the window installed slightly offset? Or can I plan the kitchen well with the window in the middle?
Forego the eye-level stove in favor of more work surface?
Or forego a possibly wider fridge as well as storage space immediately next to it to place it right next to the passage with the oven next to it on the short wall? Or is that too tight next to it (1 meter to the wall, of course worktop also planned here)?
Maybe you have some ideas?
