Is the drywall installer allowed to smoke?

Good evening everyone!

Our drywall installer started working this week. Today was the first time we encountered him. From a layperson's perspective, he has done his work well and quickly so far. However, one thing really upset me: He smokes during work. And not just one or two, but constantly. In the 10 minutes I was there, he smoked two cigarettes. As soon as he finished one, he lit the next. This probably went on all day and on previous days as well. When I came into the house, luckily I didn’t notice any significant cigarette smell. He also had one or two windows open. But now our house is sealed and as non-smokers, we don’t want smoking inside the house anymore. Especially not this frequently. At the moment only the attic is done, but gradually the walls will be done too, into which the smoke will then seep. So from a health perspective, this is unacceptable for us. I understand that as homeowners, we can of course prohibit it. On the other hand, I fear that with such a chain smoker, the work might suffer and/or take longer if smoking is banned. Or, in the worst case, out of resentment, he might not do his work properly. We have a surveyor, so it would at least be noticed, but we also want to move in at some point and not have to redo everything. He will be in the house for a few more days. Should we address it or rather not?

Didn't we have someone here last year who had a pile dumped in their house?

If you are the builders, you can certainly prevent something like that, but does it really help the progress of the construction? I assume he is an employee and receives hourly wages.

I have also always been annoyed by it, but it really doesn’t leave any lasting effect. Especially when the painters still have to go through the construction site.

Wow Does that exist?! That pile is unbelievable!

Yes, I actually hope so too, but I’m not so sure right now because of our styrofoam blocks and the thirdhand smoke...

What compulsive neurotic pedagogical antics! I say that as a non-smoker. The man smokes. That is none of the builder's business. He does his job and leaves, and nothing remains. Maybe he also eats a sausage sandwich and drinks a beer, which as a vegan and teetotaler one absolutely must not tolerate.

Ah, yes, getting personal right away. Nice to meet you too! Man, man! He is welcome to eat sausage sandwiches and drink beer, I’d even bring them to him. That doesn’t harm my health! Chain smoking in my future house might.

The sausage sandwich doesn’t seep into the walls. He can smoke as much as he wants, but not in a tightly sealed house. And that can also be phrased politely as a request – at least I think so. If he says he can’t work anymore then, well, he should just smoke out the window. Or you could give him a pack of nicotine patches and gum per day. I wouldn’t care either if it were proven to be not harmful to health at all, I just don’t want the smell in my house. It has nothing to do with a sense of mission or wannabe pedagogy. It’s about property rights and house rules.
