It would be a warm conservatory.

Over 9 m it would still be possible to build the garage with the neighbor’s signature and possibly 3 m distance, right?! It should be feasible, or where do you see problems?
We also thought about the garage for a very long time and went in circles before we went to the architect. He had played with both options and ultimately presented the design we now have. He also considered the option of placing the garage to the north, but found the existing drawing more suitable and sensible.

Were there arguments that have remained hidden from me until now?

Well, he had already "played around" with the option and room layout and simply found it overall more coherent and fitting in the current arrangement. If the garage were in the north, it would visually overwhelm the house or appear too dominant. But I find it hard to imagine and would have liked to see a design. Above all, you would then have to swing the entire "driveway" around the house if you want to leave the yard again. I can drive straight in nicely, but when driving out, you have to reverse quite a bit and then maneuver around the house.

I think plot 2 also had this issue. They had the analogous problem there. They initially designed their plan so that you could drive straight into the garage. But then they discarded the design and planned the garage and house to be aligned in one line. So just like we have now.

As a layperson, I initially didn’t question the architect any further because I found the floor plan and his ideas quite good intuitively. But on a second and third look, you do question some things.

I had one.. I’ll have to check tonight if I still have it.

It's not so big that you have to “reverse quite a bit.” I also find it completely normal to reverse onto the street. We all do it like that ;)
