Hello,

I am currently planning an Ikea kitchen and have now all the parts at home. Before I start next week, I went through all the steps/aspects again and realized that I have a few unresolved points. In particular, I believe I will have a problem with the rail mounting for the base cabinets.

The IKEA Metod manual shows that you should screw the rail with its lower edge 82 cm above the kitchen floor. However, at about 84-85 cm above the floor, a tile backsplash starts, and I also wanted to lay laminate flooring, which also adds some height.

That means I am afraid I will have to remove the lowest row of tiles (which will probably cause some discussion with the landlord). Or I would have to try to screw a board over the tiles to which I can attach the rail (if that is even possible).

Does anyone with more experience with Metod have a tip?

Hello,
Laminate in the kitchen? Well...
I wouldn't dismiss tiles. Mount the rail on the tiles or do without the rail altogether.

Hmm, I haven’t thought about drilling into the tiles yet. Thanks for the tip. I need to check again if that’s possible, the installation makes it more complicated (see picture below). Maybe you can support underneath the tiles with a thin wooden strip and drill in between.

Another thought I had was whether it might be possible to do without the suspension by using more feet, like for kitchen islands. The tiled backsplash extends about 2.5 m into the room but then stops; on the rest of the wall, the suspension could easily be realized.

At this point, a big thank you again for this forum! It is such a huge knowledge archive and people always help so well.

PS: Regarding the laminate: I am aware that it’s not optimal. I would have preferred to lay vinyl flooring, but we will probably only live in this rental apartment for 3 years, and I don’t want to spend 300-400 EUR on that.

Does the kitchen have no flooring? Tiles are the best environmentally and for health. PVC sheet flooring can be purchased for as little as €3 / m². It doesn’t get more expensive than laminate either, and with the plasticizers and the dioxins released when burned, vinyl isn’t great either.

By completely dispensing with the wall rail, I meant just four feet under the cabinet and that’s it. Aligning the rear feet is somewhat difficult, but with a bit of common sense it is possible. Ikea strongly recommends anchoring the cabinets. I have always omitted this. If several cabinets are screwed together, a heavy countertop is on top, and not all drawers are pulled out at once, nothing will tip over. Ikea naturally has to play it safe and assume that there are people who act without any common sense.

We had the same problem in our kitchen. However, since we only have drawers in the base cabinets, I did not want to do without anchoring.

We placed the cabinets on legs at the front and back, omitted the rail, and anchored the cabinets to the wall without the rail. Ikea also provides for installation without a rail, in which case plastic spacers are placed in the mounting brackets. The drill holes in the wall are then slightly deeper than they would be for the rail.

In our case, the holes in the wall are directly below the tile backsplash. This also means that part of the mounting bracket rests on the tile. I only tightened the cabinets by hand so that the tiles would not be damaged, but tight enough so that they no longer move and, above all, cannot tip forward.
