We are currently considering whether to build our house with or without a basement. Normally, we would prefer a basement, but we have very high groundwater, which is why the neighbors also could not have a basement. What alternatives would you suggest and how do you assess the costs? I have looked into a [Wanne], but the construction company advised against it, noting that it would be too expensive and not profitable.

I don't see where you want to build now, but we also wanted a basement at first. The consultant advised against it because we don't have hobbies that would require the space and we will be building in an area with low land prices. So we will build the house about 20-30sqm larger than planned and invest the saved money in a higher-quality interior (or the garden design, we'll see)

That was the alternative suggestion, I can't say anything about the costs of a basement with a tub and possibly even pumps around it.

Well, I would just see how many square meters my plot has, how much garden I would like -> how big the house can be. Is the space enough for me without a basement? If not, do I prefer to spend a lot of money on the basement with the risk that it might get damp / water might get in, or do I reduce the garden so that I have enough space in the house. What should go into the basement with you? Could that also be housed elsewhere in the house? Moppetüte *12.12.12

It depends on the house and the property itself. On a small property, you will probably not avoid having a basement as a storage room. If the property is large enough for a garage and you have the possibility to make a good attic (not just some crawl attic), then you don’t really need a basement. We have 3 children and no garage and still decided against the basement. However, we have many storage options in the house, including a converted [Spitzboden].
