Who are you telling this to? Most people who use the word "beautiful" in the garden area are not even talking about planting, but only about lawn or a tree sculpture. But try to unlearn something like that. It doesn’t work until it’s been implemented… the miserable T in the bathroom, which takes away all movement and comfort space in any bathroom, everyone still wants it, and the perforated ceiling with spots, which are later not turned on because they are either glaring or bring nothing, likewise.

So I find our T practical. On tiles, you can see the lime stains much less than on glass. But our bathroom is not a pretended wellness temple either, just a utility room for showering, brushing teeth, or using the toilet. None of us stay there for more than 5 minutes at a time. An English lawn in the blazing sun, on the other hand, has no practical added value compared to the alternatives. On the contrary: it creates significantly more work, is less ecological, and in summer you also don't want to stay there.

These are all unnecessary digressions. The OP asked about experiences with fleece as a base layer for irrigation because the recommended option by the landscape gardener is too expensive for her, but a classic lawn is important. I would recommend thinking carefully once more with the planning mind about how much emerald green showcase lawn area is really needed to be happy and then getting a cost estimate and managing the remaining areas in a more water- and resource-saving or sustainable way. Parts of the front garden can also be designed with groundcover plants, which cover area and look neat. As someone already wrote, the cistern is a drop in the ocean during drought periods. I would rather use the water for the other planting than for the flat green thing. If money is a rare species, I would also avoid complicated irrigation systems, as these require a certain amount of maintenance that will always lead to follow-up investments. Golf course look on 400 sqm and a small budget and little time and desire to maintain are mutually exclusive.

Short and concrete answer: No, we have no experience with water retention fleece.

You didn't ask for this, "but": After reading the entire thread, I would like to allow myself the question of whether you have considered drilling a well. (My husband and I did that, and a well only hurts once when you pay the bill. Otherwise, it's a pleasant thing.) I ask because you wrote something about fivefold costs, and I have no idea what dimension that corresponds to monetarily.

I assume your sandy soil is mixed accordingly so that the water does not seep away too quickly, right?

Off topic: Got caught. We have about 100 of those in the house and luckily it didn’t cost us that much money because my husband trained as an electrician before his studies and was able to install all of them himself. We also have too many sockets in the house; specifically, in some places too many and where they are needed too few. ;-) We chalk that up to first-time home builder fate. (I would really like to build again and envy Katja a little.) You did everything right. If I remember correctly, first a terraced house to gain experience, then a detached house.

I would never put a 400sqm plastic mat in my garden. You would be dealing with it forever if you want to change something. I also like a green and fairly clean lawn, but in the height of summer, you have to say goodbye to that. Then it’s just yellow for a month. And as soon as it rains again, it becomes nice again. As a normal person with normal effort, budget, and environmental awareness, you can’t counter-irrigate against that.
