In the end, it doesn’t matter at all how “one” imagines it. What counts is only how the builders themselves assess it. They would do well to answer and classify the questions you have about it for themselves. Your considerations about what additional effort and challenges such a terrace might entail are helpful in the evaluation.

If those played a role in the needs, the design would be rubbish. That’s what I mean by focusing on the “how” instead of the “what.” In our house planning, the walkways did not play a major role—and even after 6 years, we are still fine with it.

From this too, a task could be derived for the architect. When we built, it was important to us to be able to enjoy the beautiful view from our property from every living room. The architect implemented that—better than we could have come up with ourselves.

Yes, that would be like deciding on a car dealership without having discussed your own mobility requirements together.

We had a similar situation, so I, as an amateur, dealt with it for a while. For your property, I would have divided the sides into two "types." Good sides and bad sides. Good is towards the meadow and garden, bad is towards the neighbor and street. Personally, I would make sure that on the good sides are the living room, dining room, kitchen, and office. At the corners to the bad sides, I would place the kitchen and office, as the bad side bothers me less there. In the bad sides, things like guest bathroom, stairs, and technical rooms go. What I then learned is that the shape of the stairs is very important because it changes the entire floor plan. Here, I would place different staircases on the bad sides and see how the upper floor turns out. The ground floor results from the good and bad sides anyway. Personally, I would give the kids the good side upstairs since they are often there during the day and will occasionally look outside. The bedroom is usually only used by the parents in the evening, so you need a view much less often there. One more thing, since I spent more time on this than I wanted: a G-shape in the kitchen is often not optimal because you are practically surrounded by the kitchen. If you have a pantry, you need much less storage space in the kitchen. The upscale version here requires at least 3 tall cabinets (dishwasher, refrigerator, and oven). The position of the sink and the stove should ideally be such that when you use them, you are looking in a "nice direction" (usually garden or living room).

Great tips. One small note we considered during our kitchen planning: The cooktop is usually not used continuously. It would be more important to me that the main work area faces the dining area / garden.

I don't want to miss our children's bathroom. But it has turned into the dad-bathroom. The girls (big and small) use the main bathroom and dad has his peace in the adjacent (shower) bathroom.

Hey Nauer,

thank you for your reply, the help, and the advice!

We no longer consider outsourcing the technical room practical or sensible after all the advice – especially since it influences the size of the garage and makes the garage bigger, which in turn is not cost-effective due to its formation as a roof terrace.
And the other aspects you mentioned! It definitely helped us in the decision! Many thanks.
