Dear forum,

we are facing the decision about our facade color. We would like a modern shade of white here.
We have sampled interior doors and terrace roofing in RAL 9016. We would have chosen the same white shade for the exterior facade.

Now we have received the Carparol color fan from the general contractor. It lists the six attached shades of white. Although with the values L (Lightness, 100 = white, 0 = black), C (Chroma, the higher, the more colorful), H (Hue value, position of the color in the color circle). Unfortunately, no RAL tone.

The white shades have the following specifications:
Naturweiß L: 93, C: 3, H 95
Umbraweiß L: 92, C: 4, H 95
Warmweiß L: 91, C: 2, H 87
Kühlweiß L: 91, C: 1, H 185
Grauweiß L: 93, C: 1, H 116
Hellweiß L: 96, C: 2, H 109

In the thread by I read that you should choose a small C value. Does that also apply to white?
How significant are the differences in the L, C, and H values? Should we consider them in our decision or decide by gut feeling?
Would you decide based on subjective preference on the color fan or which decision criteria would you apply?

Our biggest concern is how the color fan color will actually look on the house wall. We have two samples in the offer, more for an extra charge. Which two would you choose?

We have already asked Carparol which shade is closest to RAL 9016.

Thank you in advance for your help. :)

As a reputable paint manufacturer, they should have not only a color fan with their internal names and order numbers but also RAL color fans, so you should be able to compare it yourself.

I have already said this - in all paint discussion threads since I have been here - that RAL is not Pantone. In practice, this means that RAL 9016 on wood is not the same shade as RAL 9016 on metal or RAL 9016 on a color fan. Even RAL 9016 on plaster of the same composition but different grain size is not the same. How Pantone manages to ensure, through some kind of magic, that no one mistakes a Nivea tin for Deutsche Bank blue or Yves Klein blue, I cannot explain either - I can only "warn" against believing in the possibility of a disappointment-free "surgically precise" color choice using RAL fans. In principle, RAL and Pantone differ in approach (to put it simply, Pantone normalizes the result, while RAL normalizes the effort). Therefore, the success of a RAL match depends on the material to be colored (and a color card can only indicate how the color will look on a color card).

! Nice to have you back. :)

If that is the case, we should get a positive response from Carparol.

That is clear to us. One point is also that the color tone/the finished facade should harmoniously blend into the surroundings and not appear like a foreign object.

I did the same thing the day before yesterday. The employee on the phone was surprised because he had heard the same question a few days ago. I assume that was you.

I was told that the shade of white depends on the product used. So they couldn't give me a recommendation on WHICH white I should choose now. The dear had already answered me on the same question a few days ago.
I have now told my general contractor that we will go with white. Standard as always.

I only sent my email yesterday. So it looks like we are at least three. ;)

I absolutely cannot understand the argument "it depends on the substrate anyway, so RAL doesn't matter." Precisely because there are differences depending on the substrate and the individual conditions of the facade, I want a somewhat reliable reference point along the lines of: "Our bright white corresponds to RAL 9016, but be careful, it looks different on the house facade than on the inside sides of the windows."

I don't share your ease regarding "we'll take white, standard as usual." So you really didn't choose any from Carparol's color fan, but rely solely on your GU?

Cool white, bright white, natural white are my favorites in that order. The other three are too creamy/dark for me on the color fan and on the internet. But what if it looks COMPLETELY DIFFERENT on the facade?

That's exactly why I simply choose white. According to Caparol, the color designation for many facade paints is "white." Traffic white, old white, pure white etc. would be mixed and therefore more expensive. I would like old white, but I have the same problem as you. I don't know how it will look on the facade afterward. I can't think of anything else to find out. I asked some members on Instagram. The answers were... white.
