Since our fiber provider has not managed to send anyone to blow the fiber through the existing empty conduit in 18 months, I have been working since moving in with a Magenta Speedbox XL plan on an LTE outdoor router (Zyxel LTE7480). I do home office with several hours of WebEx daily and have about 40GB of data transfer per week.

Everything runs great with nearly 250 Mbit download and 50-90 up (the plan supposedly maxes out at 50, speed tests regularly show more). The only small drawback: the internet disconnects briefly every 6 hours, but the timing can be well controlled manually by restarting the router. For me, that is now 6:30, 12:30, 18:30, and 0:30. If it shifts, just restart the router manually at one of these times and you can prepare for when the network briefly goes down (e.g., because of calls).

We have 5G here, but I still see no point in spending hundreds of euros on another router again for marginally more speed. Moreover, the selection of outdoor 5G routers is relatively limited and the Zyxel NR7101 apparently has problems with the Speedbox XL plan.

The nice thing about the Gigacube was or is that with the Flextarif it is possible to only pay when you use it. So no 24-month contract. Ideal for in between, until there is a permanent solution. Back in 2017, they were the only ones with this; other providers o2 or Telekom wanted two-year contracts. That may be different today. I don't know. We have fiber now and the Cube is standing in the cupboard waiting for emergency use if some excavator digs through the cable. What actually happened after five years.

Thanks, that is extremely good to know. At the moment, I always play games in the evening with the fear of summer – how will it be if I have to get used to gaming on an LTE router instead of FTTH gaming? :O Will the ping still be okay? Can you still play shooters with it? Can I still stream with it? I think the upstream might be tight, but my husband says 20 Mbit is enough. We’ll see.

If reasonable reception is available (I recommend an external router for this), it is also easily possible with LTE/5G, although the ping with LTE will likely be marginally higher.

Just tested:
LTE Router Outdoor: 227 down, 58 up, Ping 17
LTE: 46 down, 9 up, Ping 37
5G Phone indoor: 129 down, 12 up, Ping 28
5G Phone outdoor: 243 down, 76 up, Ping 8
All outdoor values with line of sight to the mast (about 1km away) and snow drifting.

Overwatch, mostly. Also a bit of WoW (not for a long time), Lost Ark, stuff like that. But my ping anxiety mainly refers to OW.
