Thank you all for the feedback. The planning is not finalized yet and I think we will reconsider some things. However, living space in the basement is still a "no-go." We will probably solve the staircase differently in any case.

Since we are investing half a million, it should also be nice, so thank you all. Basically, we are not looking for very modern houses, but it should be a house that definitely has a classic character. There is no extreme time pressure now, so we will listen to a few other proposals and I may come back to your help here if necessary.

The view from the balcony is even better than downstairs. We discussed the idea of placing the living area in the basement, weighed the pros and cons, and decided against it. You’re supposed to feel comfortable after all. You can’t just leave the sliding doors open in the basement (for example, with children), my girlfriend would also like to be able to see the street from the kitchen, and we don’t want to go up and down stairs every day to, for example, open the front door for someone. There is more space upstairs for the large living and dining area, since the rooms at the back in the basement are dark. If necessary, the rooms downstairs can still be used differently later on.

Still, of course, you’re both right, and I know many people who want their living area to lead directly into the garden. We are not among them.

We did it as suggested here, I don’t find the two rooms labeled as the “nicest rooms” by the forum to be the nicest myself..... We only sit on the huge balcony because the view there is much more magnificent....

I think it's good that you don't want to build the boring cookie-cutter. The white houses with anthracite windows and dark roofs. Then rather something classic.

I don't think the idea is bad, but the OP's wife wanted to look out onto the street from the kitchen.
