Mosaic made from leftovers might work for small spots, but on the whole area it will look crappy because you have hundreds of cut edges. It’s a completely different quality than purchased mosaic.

Do you think it will be that expensive? The bowl as well as the frame are in the regular price range (probably together still under €1,000). It would definitely be a good alternative for me, plus there are plenty of colors to choose from.

I asked two tile dealers about mosaic: Both said they would make it to order by simply choosing a few tiles, which are then cut into small pieces.

Isn’t it the same quality whether they cut it small or the tiler does!?

So, the mosaic made of remnants, you should really ask for the full price there, and I don't find that really exciting.

Otherwise, ask about the longitudinal drain and negotiate a discount with the tiler due to simplified installation.

In general, I do like mosaic .. I have it myself, but exactly matched to the floor tiles. However, we also have very soft water here and simple rinsing is enough. I think mosaic tiles give the feet extra grip. At least I have already showered in hotel showers with large tiles, where I was much more cautious than in my own shower.

We also wanted a "normal" drain in the middle back then. We never even got to the question of the tiles because the plumber simply installed a linear drain. Allegedly a mistake, we should be happy because there was no surcharge due to the wrong delivery. Now I get annoyed almost every day about this damn thing. It's constantly clogged and cleans terribly. In my opinion, the drain is way too small.

In the guest bathroom, we have a shower with a normal drain with mosaic, and it works perfectly. Without the mosaic, it really wouldn't have worked. It would have looked shabby. Therefore, we specifically looked for and found tiles with matching mosaic. :)

Sharp edges look bad and are not entirely harmless.

We paid roughly the same (so 450 five years ago) Damn thing, I agree with ... you constantly have to lift the rail to remove the hair. Probably every third time showering :(

Maybe it helps:

- For mosaic (many joints) you can use a dispersion-based grout -> Significantly better cleaning possible than with cement grout

- Mosaic cut in tile trade corresponds to the quality of purchased mosaic - however, purchased mosaic comes on 30x30 mats and is therefore quite easy to install. Loose it’s a huge puzzle and mainly requires a patient tiler. If he belongs to the fast faction, it looks like sh**.

- Longitudinal channel -> €600 surcharge: It’s a bit premium, but by no means rip-off. The channel system alone quickly costs between €250-400 bare. Additionally, more complex sealing work, redesign of the drain and possibly general contractor surcharge due to special request.

- Point drain in the middle is actually a bit unusual, you constantly stand in a kind of hole.

- Point drain is also available near the edge, but not from all manufacturers. Possibly this is an option. I could inquire about the manufacturer upon request.
