Who only has a hammer sees every problem as a nail. Certainly, electric energy is the noblest form because everything can be generated from it... but at the latest the master is taught that it also has to remain economically sensible because resources and money do not grow on trees. Some people were told in a short seminar "Thermodynamics for Housewives" that electricity is the solution to everything and now they believe that. But most of the time it is better to use the form of energy that does not have to be converted through 3 intermediaries... if I need heat, then heat is the first choice, not electricity.

In this respect, I would definitely keep the solar panels. Your roof offers little space for much photovoltaics anyway, especially not facing south. So why throw away what you have and spend a comparatively large amount of money to install 2 or 3 kWp on the roof? Then, when you really need the heat pump, your photovoltaic system hardly produces any energy anymore. Typical values for a 1 kWp system: January around 20 kWh, July around 140 kWh.

Solar thermal uses sunlight much more efficiently. And you can store hot water quite simply; with photovoltaics you would still need an expensive battery...

While some here are hitting the Spax screw with the hammer... be clever, use the tool appropriate to the situation and take the screwdriver...

"Thermodynamics for Housewives"

But back to the topic: I admit that with an old oil heating system with this consumption, I would not have thought of a heat pump - I would have bought a new oil heating system.

Then there will be new radiators and the electricity consumption will be around - rough estimate - 2,500 (up to a maximum of 3,000) kWh. That currently also means only 650€ heating costs with a heat pump and a house that ultimately meets today’s standards without fossil fuels.
That is "only" a 700-900€ reduction in heating costs, so it does not pay off that quickly, but at least it's a move away from oil.

With this house, I would have thought of a heat pump immediately. Definitely no more oil.

Why? Well, a heat pump can make sense, provided you don’t deceive yourself into thinking that it will eventually be cost-effective compared to fossil fuels and that you will save a significant amount of money. It’s basically break-even after 15, 20 years, and then you already need a new one. This basically also applies to photovoltaics. But if you already have solar thermal on the roof, it makes absolutely no sense to throw it away and replace it with photovoltaics.

Why? To get away from oil. You can keep solar thermal. There is already a circuit with a buffer tank anyway (@TE: that’s right, isn’t it?). You can integrate a heat pump quite easily there. Yes, it might “cost” a controller more. In the lifespan of the heat pump, a saving of €15,000 comes together (without price increases in oil due to CO2 charges). With that, you’ve definitely paid off the pure heat pump installation with a monoblock. Why stay with oil then? Especially if you personally want to move away from oil? There really aren’t any reasons that strongly speak in favor of oil that you should stay with it - but for example, I wouldn’t want to replace a 5-year-old oil heating system despite a “green” perspective.

Hello and sorry for the late response,

I was busy with our daughter's school enrollment, it's very interesting to see the different perspectives here.
Basically, I am very convinced of heat pumps, also in combination with radiators, if the house is reasonably suitable. My parents have been heating their prefabricated house from 1990 with an air-to-water heat pump for almost 20 years. So I grew up half with an oil heating system and half with a heat pump.
I feel increasingly uneasy about the global and political developments regarding oil and worry that it will eventually become financially unbearable.
I am expecting a call next week regarding an on-site appointment with the energy consultant. Let's see how he assesses the situation. As a precaution, I will bring my father (who was a technician at the local energy supplier until his recent retirement) along to the appointment so that he understands everything and can ask the right questions if I might not immediately follow everything.
We have a buffer storage tank for the solar system.
