so IF at all (I find balconies on the upper floor pointless in a single-family house) then covered. The neighbors of my parents-in-law, for example, converted their house and turned the balcony into another room (because it was never used anyway), so it is practical if the roof is already there

I think exactly the same. I once tried to do "home office" on the terrace, but it was quite annoying. The mouse didn’t work properly on the table; when the sun came out it was so bright behind the screen that you couldn’t see anything properly; some fly or wasp was constantly annoying; when a car or truck passed by, I couldn’t hear anything on the phone anymore. A large floor-to-ceiling window with a French balcony might also be an alternative? When it’s open, you already have a bit of the feeling of being outside. At least I do.

So if it's a balcony, I would also choose the "integrated" one. However, the question arises for me how often it will then be used as an office. And wouldn't it perhaps be cheaper to create openness there with corresponding skylights and a very large window?

Although I do quite like balconies in that form myself, in vacation apartments we have had, we also used it very gladly. But the main living area is probably on the ground floor after all, and then the question is how often it will be used!?

Choose the covered option, since there will also be a terrace in front of it. Being able to sit outside even in the rain is great; possibly install heating elements (powered by photovoltaics also feels good). I think a covered solution is great. Also, having several outdoor spaces on a house is cozy. Depending on what kind of room is behind the balcony, it benefits enormously from it.
In our house, every room has a door to a terrace or balcony in front of it, which basically frames the house to the south.
